ML Hobgoblin BAF: Spider-Man

It's been a long time since we've had a classic Spider-Man take form in a Marvel Legends. Not to say that he's under used since Spider-Man has had a set in honors of the Amazing Spider-man movie(the franchise might be dead despite my dismay). In the past, there were also a myriad of Spider-Men that collectors and casual buyers could choose from when it came to the wall crawler; well that slowed down but I knew the day would happen when Parker would sling back into his classic duds and grace us Marvel Legends style.

Typical box. Not much to show here. Though one can really see just how much accessories he comes with.

While some would say that he is classic, I can agree, but he isn't the 'classic' Spider-Man with the web pits and all. He is more modern Spider-Man as one could say and somehow, with the brighter colors, he reminds me of animated Spider-Man from the 90s. The mold isn't that bad; in fact it's pretty Spidey accurate. Though his torso is a bit too long and at times he makes other Marvel heroes too short. Not scale accurate sometimes makes the character not as fun to pose with other characters.

Accessory wise, he comes with a decent amount. Three set of hands(fists, open crawling/holding pizza hands, and thwip hands), two variant faces, and a ... pizza? I'm not sure where that little idea came from, but it works. Oh and he comes with the BAF piece. This should be a standard accessory idea for all Hasbro Legends(would've worked well with Spider-Girl and U.Spider-Woman).

As far back as I can remember through the years with Toybiz and Hasbro, I don't think I have ever come across a Spider-Man with a variant head that sports the 'half mask' on. I do like it, and I'm more than positive that he will remain with this head for display since I have enough masked Spider-Men in my "Spider-verse" display. Speaking of display...

The webbing is of course 'custom', and it's as much of a toy artist as I can get when it comes to customization. Simple bendy wires that comes from certain toys and such. Makes an adequate webbing. But honestly, with that said webbing, it makes him a bit more fun and a little more 'Spidey' Dynamic. The only thing Hasbro needs to do with some of these nimble and agile characters are their leg articulations. Again, not to sound perverted(especially when I'm talking about female characters), they need to be able to spread their legs. Seriously! It gives them wider range of dynamic actions! But I won't be redundant on my comments about that. This Spidey was fun to pose.

Classic rivalry! This Green Goblin may be a bit outdated compared to this Spidey, but it still looks aesthetically pleasing next to the new Spider-Man.

Still one heck of a great punching bag for Parker too! I'm just imagining this is after Gwen's death so Parker is fuming with grief and rage(Spider-Gwen figure PLEASE Hasbro!).

As a former Spider-Man enthusiast, I would say that this figure is probably one of the best Spider-Man we got. He has issues like the legs, the height, and I don't know why the elbow pegs are red(as can be seen in this picture) and not blue. But honestly, despite all those flaws, he is great to have in the Spider-Man collection/Spider-Verse. He is also a necessary piece for the Hobgoblin BAF.

One thing about this figure, it does capture the humor that surrounds Spider-Man.

ML Sentinel BAF: 1st Appearance Spider-Man

Wow, it must be the Spider-Man season all over again! I bought another one? No actually this one's been in my position for a long time now. As I have mentioned in the past I'm still partially a 'in-the-box' kind of collector and the 1st Appearance Spider-Man of the Sentinel BAF was one of those. Not anymore! Toybiz may have stopped becoming part of the Marvel Legends line a long time ago but some of their greatest toys have yet to fill my game room and this BAF is one of those I NEED(want).

Of course the classic Toybiz Marvel Legends case: hard transparent plastic that is anti-silence when opening! These cases are probably the reason why some of my Legends figures from Toybiz stayed hanging for too long. Classic design and good for display, keeps the figures sealed in nice and safe, and they are durable! Check out the fancy stickers on the front and the informative dossier of the character on the back! Health stats, strength, etc! It also shows the figures that completes the BAF. Speaking of the figure…

Right off the get go it's quite easy to see that it's for sure a Toybiz figure with body. I'll go into the articulation in a moment here but the skinny frame, the extra details, and the sometimes awkward fingers definitely screams Toybiz! While I'm not a huge fan of the lanky frame, I do say that Toybiz adheres to how Peter was when he first donned the Spider-Man suit. In fact, everything about this figure does capture the first time appearance of Spidey way back in Amazing Fantasy! The symbol, the eyes, the color, and of course the web pitts(though not exactly the best interpretation because it looks like he is wearing some kind of cloth behind him and not just on his pitts). All in all, it's still a good piece of work, not going to gripe too much about the little things since it is an older figure.

While the BAF series of Toybiz didn't go overzealous on the accessory department, one thing I can say is that they had some decent ones to tag along the figure. A comic book, the stand(I still find myself enamored with these stands by the way), and of course a piece of a BAF(usually a huge one) that happens to be the upper part of the Sentinel. Not much to really say, though I will admit that the comic book is a good icing.

"Uh oh, somebody's been a bad lizard!"
I can't help but think that whenever I put this Spidey in a 'wall crawler' pose! Oh well, let's move on! The articulation is one of the highlights of this figure and pretty much just about every figure that Toybiz came out with! I can almost really say that this Spidey can do whatever Spider-Man can!

The basic articulation that we can all expect from Hasbro(not talking about the newly implemented ons from the Spider-Man infinite series) and then some. Some of the things that some collectors miss are the finger articulation. This Spider-Man for sure has them and I must say that his hands looks odd and having a closed fist is damn near impossible to have. There are times I can do without the finger movements and would just prefer alternate hands and this is one of those said times. He's also missing the ankle pivot that makes certain poses especially for Spider-Man more natural.

Compared to today's brand new Spider-Man toy how does first appearance Spider-Man hold up? If one just looks at the notion of 'first appearance' compared to the modern day Spider-Man, one will truly have an answer. It's not the first appearance of Spidey in the plastic form, but it is ONE of the first few Marvel Legends and I must say it still holds up. Detail wise it still has that intricate and vintage feel to him that doesn't make him look bad right next to the newest mold of Spidey. While missing a few good things in the articulation department, this Toybiz can still be a good competition to Hasbro. All in all, it's a good toy still considering how old it is!

Truthfully, I am in no dire need of any more Spider-Man toys. If he didn't come with the Sentinel piece, I probably would've kept him in the case and displayed. Now don't misconstrue, I am VERY pleased with this guy, it's just that I don't think he will be the first Marvel Legend I'll be looking for every time I go inside my game room!

The Sentinel however might be pretty high up there on the BAF line up… we'll see!

"... Does whatever ... "

In a world full of blood and stripped of hope ...

In uncertainty and doubt in which we must cope ...

Testing one's rage and to collect one's mind ...

Bonds defining us keeps it intertwined ...

... Keep going. Keep fighting. Because if I look back and say I walked away ...

I'll hate myself for giving up. I'll do whatever it takes to keep fighting.

It's my responsibility despite me not having full power.

X-Cessive Force

This would be a Team in Marvel that will never happen. Why? Well there are a few simple reasons but to point out plainly, Why would Carnage cooperate with anyone? Who the Hell is Maestro? Back in Black was deterred by 'One More Day'. Uncanny X-Force was a clandestine group that Logan would not have risked exposed to the public eye. Daken still has father and son complex. Red Hulk... Well Red Hulk seemed to have taken a 180 in his character in regards to teaming up, or maybe I deciphered his character wrong? Who Knows? The point of the matter is that the writing would have to be convoluted and a bit on the risky side and how volatile it is is multiplied in this scenario!

Thanks to the possibilities of toy collecting, we can kind of have a fantasy team. Hell, one can even articulate a rivalry (more feasible) than an actual six man team!

Then of course, before there was a colossal army of Iron Men parading my game room, there was this two with their vibrant and less than intimidating alternate outfits! Logan and Peter are cash cow of Marvel and a bit on the mainstream, my favoritism for these two may be highly factored in by that, but hey, they are popular for a reason right?

Regardless, written and drawn by the right people these two can be some of the most interesting of the Marvel Universe in my opinion and it's why I am enamored by them still. Personally, it's because of these dark outfits that somewhat makes the deal right for the pictures. Red and Black looks rather spectacular.

Again, Assembling this team is no Avenger like madness, it will be even more. But if these group of extraordinary gentlemen ever agree on one consensus, well, let's just say they can induce some excessive force; and What If they have less inhibitions than before (Spider-Man on rage could work rather efficiently)?

"The Amazing Spider-Man"

"We All Have Secrets... The Ones that we Keep. and the Ones that are Kept from US."

Suffice to say, it is the release date of "The Amazing Spider-Man". The better reboot of the super hero franchise! Sadly, it didn't do as well as some other abhorrent movie that came out at the same time, but God knows that there are ignorance, stupidity, and asinine people roaming about.

HOTTER than Anne Hathaway. For sure!

Movie night! As soon as it is in my possession, it will be the movie I will be watching!!!

Spidey's Duds!

Well, as I have mentioned, it is Spidey Month (while July lasts anyways). And let me just ramble briefly about some of my favorite suits that Spidey wore in his decades of crime fighting. Be aware that I will not go in great detail with any of them and maybe in the future I will blog about them with more depth. As of right now, let's just muse at their aesthetics, shall we?

Black Suit

Iron Spider

Future Foundation

Ben Reilly Spider-Man.

And one that I have blogged about already: Scarlet Spider 2012 (Kaine)

Again, this is just a minor words in regards to Spidey's fashion statement throughout the years. Sadly, his original one isn't exactly the coolest thing ever, but it serves as nostalgia. But he is in DIRE need of a new suit!!! One of these would suffice (The Iron Spider!).

Scarlet Spider 2012

An Illusive Spider working in the shade of blood red.

July is Spidey Month for obvious reasons. It's been a while since I have actually been this super excited for Spider-Man since the whole 'One More Day' tirade that pretty much ruined everything for me in the Spider-Man mythos. Though I can even sullenly admit that even to this day, I myself haven't completely found myself caught back in the webs of Spider-Man's story. However once in a while I'll take a glance at what is going on (though lost in translation) in the Web-Head's world. Not too long ago I found myself running across the 'New Scarlet Spider' and well... I was impressed with how he looks. The whole Red and Black attire more than suffice for a more darker and a bit more intimidating Spidey!

*Note* I will not go into it right now but! Scarlet Spider was also the name of Spidey's clone, Ben Reilly who donned another Spidey thread that had the color scheme of the original Spider-Man duds but a bit more... I don't know? It wasn't a bad thread at all, but it's not my favorite outfit. As seen in the left here! Heck even the Iron Spider armor (that Tony Stark provided) was even plastered as 'Scarlet Spider' when 'they' joined the Avengers Initiative. As abhorrent as this sounds, it wasn't even Ben, Kaine, or Peter that donned it(that is after Parker dissuades himself to join Cap's side in the Civil war!). As seen to the right!

My New favorite Spidey outfit!
I don't know the exact story line nor can I say if I will really delve into it with detail or have the energy and time to do so. I will say that if the art proves tantalizing (and it does) then I think when it's in cheap price I'll pick it up perhaps. Not that my myriad of activities doesn't keep me busy enough! However, designing the new Spidey the way they did had an efficacious result. Obviously! I'm blogging about it!

"Does whatever a Spider Can't."

Anyways! This concludes my little rant about another corner of the Marvel Universe. And yes, doesn't the new Scarlet duds look absolutely Amazing in the game?!

My Words On:

Story/Plot: Now I already have experience with movie games. In regards to games that are adaption from movies they usually do one of two things: They make it based on the movie with a few modifications so that it won't spoil the plot of the movie TOO much; OR they make it like a sequel after the events from the theaters transpired. Well this game did the latter of the two and directly after the horrifying events that took place with the Lizard. I have to say, I wasn't too impressed with the story since it was a bit predictable. Again I didn't expect very much, but I was also hoping to be proved wrong or astonished. It wasn't that bad, but it was far from great and it barely hit mediocre. Still, to scrutinize the plot and its execution too much would be rhetoric and not exactly healthy since over all outside the plot I enjoyed the game.

5.0/10

Gameplay: Now this is the game's most redeemable department. When I heard that they were going to put Spidey back in the sandbox genre I was excited and partially waiting for a disaster. Like I mentioned in a prior post about this game (Slight Words on the Amazing Spider-Man), the last time that genre of a Spider-Man game had been touched was with Web Of Shadows, and prior before that was Spider-Man 3 (which to its defense it was a good enough game, but the fact that it derives from a very atrocious movie, it didn't have much quarters for success).

Part of the thing that had made Spidey games successful in the past is the idea and the feel of you web slinging your way to various places, sticking to anything, diving off the highest sky scrapers then using the web line to redirect that momentum to wherever the gamer pleases. Well true believers, Beenox brought it all back with some minor twists of their own and the result of this side of the gameplay rather sensational, if I do say so myself. Nothing brings satisfaction to a Spider-Man fan than getting the tingling feeling of swinging through the air, plummeting down in gravity's speed, then eye'ing a particular building to web to and then sticking to the structure so that one can scale up and do that same breath taking action again. It really feels like a Spider-Man game and roaming around the city was probably the fun factor's greatest asset. Now like the much revered Spider-Man 2 game, gamers are allowed to land to the streets next to an unsuspecting citizen and then find him/herself back at high altitudes with a web line or two.  Of course traveling on the lower side of the vertical world (the streets) doesn't hinder Spidey one bit. The ability to use the 'web dash vision' to pick and choose anything to web to with immaculate precision makes cars v.s. Spidey seem like the rabbit v.s. the turtle race (with Spidey being the smart rabbit and never stopping to take a rest).

As Spidey, the city is yours to roam free!

Now the other part of the gameplay is of course the fighting. Now I'm not going to go out on a limb and say that it was Amazing as traveling through Manhattan. I will say however that it offers a very similar fighting style like the successful Arkham City/Asylum. Those who had delved into the gritty world of Batman can say that the fighting sequence wasn't at all complex but it did offer some good variations on the very simple gameplay. Simplicity is a genius and one can just build up on combos with a single button, react and evade with another button, and every once in a while one can use variation button combination to use gadgets or finishing moves. Well, Beenox took some of that successful sequences and made it MUCH more simpler. Too simple sometimes that the fights seems a bit TOO one sided. The lackeys and the goons of course would be push overs, build a few combo streak, evade a few strikes, signature move (total of three buttons by now) and every once in a while if need be, one can even retreat if the going gets tough. OF course there are alternate route to defeat such minor baddies with the use of the webbing both projectile or long range melee methods, and in some parts of the game, using the ability of a discreet spider, Spidey can even perform stealth take downs which one can easily clear out a room no problem since AI's lack real awareness of their surroundings.

Bosses also depends a lot on knowing how to time the proper buttons when it is needed. While the game is well adept in putting the idea of 'does whatever a spider can' into the game, there is no real tactics in most boss fights. Rhino, Iguana, Vermin, Scorpion, or even Lizard didn't feel too different; just a bunch of button mashing, properly time evasion, then adhering to a few button sequence then the boss fights are over. The colossal Spider-Slayers offer great visuals, but in the end the fight feels the same way as fighting a cross species humanoid with the timed button sequence and a bit more web slinging tactics and less melee button mashing. The one entertainment that varies from fighting humanoid in contrast to the slayers is the fact that the more exhilarating method of web slinging is included in the tactic. One of the boss battle, a snake like Slayer slithers about the city and the gamer has to utilize the web slinging, the web zip, and all other methods to keep Spidey on his toes (or off of it) to ensure that weakness of the giant robot is always available to be struck. While those moments did offer an accumulative result of both battle and the sand box gameplay, in the end such gargantuan feats still doesn't shy away from the more mundane fights. Yet it feels grand, but I feel that the fights could've offered more.

Now some of the things that are offered are the side quests like minor petty crimes, car chase, web slinging challenges, and carrying people to the hospital for treatment. They even touch on Parker's photography hobby on certain quests! While they offer a bit more to the cumulative experience, they do get a bit redundant at times and one can always revert back to the fun level of web slinging. If one wants to add a bit more 'intense' side quests, there are always chasing Black Cat or the Rhino all throughout New York.

So in the grand scheme of things, it is a fun Spider-Man game, don't get me wrong. It's been a while since I have had a feeling that I was the web slinger free to roam around in an open world where his ever so prominent abilities are duplicated rather well. Yet in some manner, that could've been the downfall of the game. The fun factor rides too much on that ability and a lot less attention are given to the others. The boss battles lacks in the real distinction between each fight, the side quests can become redundant, and there's only so much fun in webbing, jumping, and using the finishing signature moves on an opponent. This game does nothing too spectacular, however I am not going to disdain to say that it doesn't really fall too short of being an Amazing game for those who are a fan of the comic book and the movie itself. Probably one of the strongest Spidey game in a while.

8/10

Graphics: I can't really hide the fact that the visuals isn't exactly the game's strongest point but not exactly its weakness. Like a lot of games, there are a few and far between aesthetic between the player's controlled character and the rest of the world, whether we are talking about NPC's, environment, or just some random piece of 'decor' within the game. So Spidey looks great. He looks like Spider-Man and his movements doesn't shy away the details that makes him recognizable. The details put into his outfit is rather appreciating (and of course the alternate outfits themselves will make a good addition to the beauty of fan service, but unfortunately I don't really have all of them!). The background of Manhattan isn't exactly eye popping, but again it doesn't make me cringe to think that I am playing a ps2 game. So all in all the graphics takes the mediocre stand point. Some parts looks above, while other ares fall under the norm.

The CGs (or lack of?) aren't worth calling out since I didn't think it would suffice. The special affects aren't completely flashy but it does the world and the vibe well enough. I do think it has plenty of improvements, but again, in the grand scheme of things, I was impressed!

The Extra suits look Amazing!!! The Scarlet Spider (2012) for sure!

7/10

Difficulty: While I only played it on the default mode for the entire time the vibe I got from it is that the more pressing difficulty won't be that much of a difference. While I had already stated that the gameplay itself on the battle mode is simple with a few variation of 'difficulty', the overall impression I had received from the AI and the boss battles doesn't give a fair share of promise. Meaning to say, the game itself didn't offer too much in this department. Again my judgement may not be as potent since it was only beaten on the default difficulty, however the amount of 'reactive' button sequence that allows players to stride through the game's most 'epic' boss battle with ease doesn't exactly give players too much to handle. That and the intelligence of the AI's falls too short and the mere act of retreating and 'stealth' take downs makes the battle ground far too easy.

Meaning to say that some aspects of the game had made Spider-Man a super discreet and very elite SHIELD trained Spidey or maybe he is just going toe to toe with some of the most incompetent people of the whole entire Marvel Universe. Not only are they inadequate to spot him in his not so illusive costume, but when they do have him in sight they don't have the capability to keep their crosshairs on him for one web zip and he can vanish in thin air! And maybe outside closed buildings like being in Manhattan does provide Spidey with the vastness to escape... however everywhere else doesn't suffice for a very convincing 'ninja vanish'.
When finding myself in a dire situation, all I simply have to do is web retreat a few times and eventually I won't will be in the shadows again.
So while the game's fan factor still falls pretty high in comparison to a lot of the Spider-Man games lately, it still lacks an obvious need to make a few parts of the game challenging enough to make one feel that Spider-Man can do whatever a spider can including getting a few scrapes along the way.

6/10

Voice Acting/Audio: Humor is one of the main things Spidey fans think about when the Wall Crawler pops up in their mind. Despite his rather disheveled life outside the red and blue tights, Peter Parker is nothing short of his skill to use his words to either distract, annoy, or merely keep himself entertained when fighting his colorful band of rivals and villains. Now while the voice actor of The Amazing Spider-Man did not lack the charisma that Spidey usually has, the script itself fell short and it seemed that his jokes on the whim was rather too bland or just plain redundant. While some games do have the major flaws of having their characters repeat the same thing more than enough times to notice and to annoy the gamer, this one seems to be a bit more outstanding on that notion. Maybe because I listen to Spidey's barbs and jokes since I find them hilarious which made me really catch all the redundant quotes and less than impressive lines.

The music itself offered more gratifying feel to ill in the mood of the game. But it doesn't do that much of a justice to help this department, but let me just say that it was more tolerable than the voice acting. I'm not saying that the actors themselves did a bad job (Felicia Hardy seems to be familiar. She sounds like Black Cat from the Animated series way back when.... probably not her though), but the dialogue they were given didn't really compel to entertain.

I guess I was really disappointed with the Spidey's way with words in this game. One of the things that makes Spider-Man him is the wise crack and the ever so wonderful ways he uses humor to insult and/or keep the battle upbeat for him; and that said statement goes for Spider-Man's appearance in comic books, movies, video games, etc. etc. But I guess since I don't really recall TOO much funny things that came out of the Peter's mouth in the movie, this game echoed that lacking perk of being Spider-Man.

5.0/10

Overall: I can't remember the last time I felt this way about a Spider-Man game. Yeah I enjoyed Shattered Dimension for what it was but I feel like the most fervent way to imitate the Web Head in the game is through an open world genre like this one. By its own right this is a great game with many things to offer a person who happens to be both a Spidey and a gamer! While I have pointed out that this game is not the immaculate piece of disc to probe your console, it still has something a slight flare that can keep one feel like s/he has power and the responsibility to use it as a Spider-Man should. While I can't exactly say that this will have some video game awards from me and the rest of the gaming world, it can still have a place in the wall as a positive stepping stone to the Web Head's gaming career. It may not be the definitive of 'Amazing' at all times however the occasional times that it captures that said word will make me say that the game lived up to a few expectations and didn't do half bad for being a movie based game.

The Secret.

So what was the secret behind a great comic book movie? The character? The villains? The actors and actresses? The writer? The director? The action and the special affects? The advertising or just how attracting the cast are? Or is it the homage to the comic book community who has decades and decades of material to pull from, manipulate... to do right or stray in the God Awful path?

While those factors I have mentioned are obviously a very potent formula to make a good movie/comic book movie, but as a fan of the genre of Comic books (both Marvel and DC), to me it's always about the heart. It's about the humanity and the ability of the movie to compel the audience to feel how the character feels. I guess Spider-Man had always had that thing going for him despite him not necessarily one of the biggest hitters of Marvel (in regards to a power house; I mean to say is that he doesn't hit like Thor), but it's the fact that so many can relate to him because of his human dilemma.

Then again, Marvel always has that very prominent signature about them. Their alter egos always has the more dire problems (relatively speaking) in most pages. It's about their human drama that makes them tick or not and in this movie, Spider-Man doesn't fail to connect to me because his problem as Peter Parker is very close to reality and very easy to relate to.

It's safe to say now that this new Spider-Man reboot for sure surpasses the old one. For many reasons I am truly unable to list as of right now, but I can say that my rapport with Spidey may have been revived after a long long time of staying away because of 'One More Day'. So... I'll have to take one more trip to the theaters and watch it again... perhaps I can jot down the words a bit better next time around.

But to be terse about my opinion, That Was Amazing. Yeah I know, a cliche compliment! But regardless, it's the best suited word for the movie.
